Herkimer County, located in the great state of New York, is rich in history and culture. Established on February 16, 1791, the county was named in honor of Nicholas Herkimer, a Revolutionary War hero who played a significant role as the commander of the Tryon County militia during the Battle of Oriskany. The region covers an area of approximately 1,458 square miles and is situated within the state's central region, known as the Mohawk Valley.

Initially inhabited by Native American tribes like the Mohawk and Oneida, this region was later settled by European immigrants, predominantly Dutch and German, fostering a diverse environment. During the American Revolutionary War, the county played a vital part in providing support to the Continental Army. The strategic location of the region made it a major hub for trade, agriculture, and transport along the Erie Canal, which connected New York City to the Great Lakes.

Famous for its abundance of natural resources, Herkimer County has been home to mining and manufacturing operations throughout history. The county's quarries are known for producing "Herkimer diamonds," which are actually double-terminated quartz crystals with high clarity and luster. Discovered in the late 18th century, these crystals have become a sought-after geological specimen and a popular collector's item, serving as a unique and fun fact about the region.
