Jefferson County, located in the great state of New York, was officially established on March 28, 1805. It was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President who was serving at the time of the County's formation. The region was previously a part of Oneida County, which was formed in 1798. Jefferson County is situated in the central-northern part of the state and is part of the Thousand Islands-Seaway region, in the extreme northwestern corner of the Adirondack Park.

A significant portion of the early population in the county were settlers from New England, which had a powerful impact on the county's institutions and culture. During the War of 1812, Sackets Harbor in Jefferson County played a vital role as the primary U.S. Navy base on Lake Ontario.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area experienced economic growth, primarily due to its diverse agricultural industries, water-powered mills, and the development of the railroad, which improved transportation and trade.

The fun fact about Jefferson County is that it consists of 1,864 islands in the St. Lawrence River, as part of the famous Thousand Islands region. This picturesque area attracts tourists with its charming nature-filled small island paradises, majestic castles such as Boldt Castle on Heart Island, and ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and cottage life.
