Lewis County is located in the great state of New York, nestled within the picturesque Tug Hill Plateau and the Black River Valley region. Established on March 28, 1805, it was formed from portions of Oneida County. Named after Morgan Lewis, the third governor of New York, Lewis County has a rich history that combines agriculture, industry, and commerce.

The county seat, Lowville, was officially established in 1800, even before Lewis County's founding in 1805. The Black River, the county's major waterway, played a crucial role in its development, facilitating transportation and supporting the growth of mills and factories with its rushing waters.

Logging and farming were the primary industries in Lewis County throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Its rich soil and expansive forests provided fertile ground for growing cash crops such as hops, which fueled the booming beer-brewing industry in the state. The region was particularly known for its dairy farming, a legacy that continues to this day, with several large dairy farms operating in the area.

Fun Fact: One unique attraction in Lewis County is the American Maple Museum, located in Croghan. The museum, which opened in 1977, celebrates the history and tradition of maple syrup production in North America. It houses various exhibits dedicated to the sugarmaking industry, displaying tools, techniques, and artwork related to the region's maple sugarmaking heritage.
