Nassau County, located in the great state of New York, is situated on western Long Island, bordering the New York City borough of Queens to the west and Suffolk County to the east. The county was officially formed in 1899, named in honor of the Dutch Royal House of Nassau and to acknowledge a political connection to the Netherlands.

Before European exploration, the area now known as Nassau County was inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Native American tribe, the Lenape. Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1600s, but it was the English who took control of Nassau County in 1664. For much of the 17th and 18th centuries, the region shared its history with Queens County.

During the American Revolution, Nassau County was heavily affected by the hostilities between the British forces and the local patriots, leading to a divided community. After the war, Nassau County developed into a thriving agricultural and maritime-based economy.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the region transformed from a rural landscape to a more suburban one, with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1860s playing a significant role in this change. Population growth surged in the post-World War II era due to a booming housing market, and Nassau County matured into one of the wealthiest and most populous counties in the United States.

Fun fact: Nassau County has a long history of aviation, being home to some of the first airfields in the US as well as the historic Charles Lindbergh flight to Paris in 1927, which took off from Roosevelt Field in Garden City, Nassau County.
