Oneida County is situated in the central region of New York State and was established on March 15, 1798, from Herkimer County. Covering approximately 1,258 square miles, it is named after the Oneida, an Iroquoian tribe that formerly inhabited the area. Oneida County played a significant role in American history, particularly during the Revolutionary War, as it includes the sites of the Battle of Oriskany (1777) and Fort Stanwix, which is now a National Historic Monument.

The county is home to the city of Utica, its largest city and county seat, as well as the towns of Rome, New Hartford, and Kirkland. Utica became a transportation hub during the 19th century after the completion of the Erie Canal and later the railroad system.

Oneida County's industries were focused on textiles, iron, and brass manufacturing in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but have since shifted to advanced technologies, healthcare, and education.

A fun fact about Oneida County is that the Oneida Community Mansion House, located in the town of Oneida, was the home of a utopian community called the Oneida Community, which existed from 1848 to 1880. The group practiced communal living and advocated for gender equality and shared labor, making it a unique and progressive experiment in American social history.
