Onondaga County, located in the central region of New York State, was officially established on March 5, 1794. The county's name is derived from the Onondaga Nation, one of the original five nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful Native American alliance at the time. The Onondagas were predominantly settled around Onondaga Lake, which they considered sacred.

The city of Syracuse serves as the county seat and is also the largest city in the area. The decision to construct the Erie Canal, an important waterway linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, proved to be a significant factor in the county's growth during the early 19th century. The canal opened in 1825, and it revolutionized transportation and trade, attracting numerous industries and settlers to the region.

Onondaga County played an essential role in the abolitionist movement, with Syracuse becoming a significant hub of the Underground Railroad. A notable event in the fight to end slavery occurred in 1851 when a group of abolitionists and Syracuse residents helped free an escaped slave named Jerry, who was captured under the Fugitive Slave Act. This event became known as the "Jerry Rescue."

Additionally, the county was home to the inventor, John D. Hertz, who was a leader in the automotive industry and whose surname is now synonymous with the Hertz car rental company. Now, Onondaga County is known for its higher education institutions, museums, and parks.

Fun fact: Onondaga Lake Park, a popular spot in the county, is home to the "Salt Museum," which showcases the region's legacy as the "Salt City" due to its booming salt production industry in the 19th century. Syracuse played a significant role in supplying the United States with salt during this time, which contributed to the growth of the city and county.
