Ontario County, located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, was founded in 1789, making it one of the original 12 counties of the state. The county was formed from part of Montgomery County and covered a much larger area than it does today, including the present-day counties of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Steuben, Wyoming, Wayne, and Yates. The county is named after Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes of North America.

Early settlers in the region were mainly of English, Scotch-Irish, and German descent. The rich soil, fertile landscape, and abundant water sources made the area perfect for agriculture, and many early residents were farmers. Geneva, the county's first settlement, was established in 1787.

During the early 1800s, the construction of the Erie Canal and the development of the rail system had a significant impact on the growth and prosperity of Ontario County. These infrastructural improvements facilitated trade and transportation, attracting more people and businesses to the area.

Ontario County has been home to many notable historical figures and events. It was the birthplace of the women's rights movement in the 19th century. The first Women's Rights Convention was held in Seneca Falls, a nearby town, in 1848. The famous suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were both affiliated with events and activities in the county.

Fun fact: The popular 1980s movie "Purple Rain," starring the musician Prince, featured motorcycle scenes filmed at the beautiful Canandaigua Lake, one of the 11 Finger Lakes situated in Ontario County, New York.
