Orleans County is a picturesque region located in the western portion of New York State, along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The county was established on April 15, 1824, when it was separated from Genesee County. The area is known for its rich history, with the Erie Canal running through it, making it a vital transportation route during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Originally, the land was home to the Seneca tribe, who were part of the Iroquois Confederacy. European settlement began in the late 18th century, mostly consisting of people from New England. Orleans County played a role in the War of 1812, with Point Breeze, the confluence of Oak Orchard Creek and Lake Ontario, being a significant military encampment.

One of the defining features of Orleans County is the historic Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and brought increased economic development to the region. The canal allowed for the transportation of goods and people from the Hudson River to the Great Lakes, fostering the growth of several communities in the county.

The county is composed of ten towns, with Albion serving as the county seat. Historically, Orleans County's economy was primarily based in agriculture, producing crops such as apples, beans, and corn. The region is also home to several sandstone quarries that have supplied building materials across the United States.

A fun fact about Orleans County is that the town of Medina, located within the county, is known for its unique sandstone architecture. Many of the historic buildings in Medina were constructed utilizing the abundant local sandstone resources. The town is also noted for its charming downtown area, which features the well-preserved 19th-century architecture, and is known for its vibrant community events, attracting visitors from all over.
