Oswego County is located in the northern part of the state of New York and was established on March 1, 1816. It was carved out from parts of the earlier counties of Oneida and Onondaga. Named after the Oswego River, the county covers an area of about 1,312 square miles, with Lake Ontario to the northwest, the Tug Hill Plateau to the east, and the Plain of Sandy Creek to the south. The word "Oswego" is believed to come from the Iroquois word "Osh-we-geh," which means "pouring out place" - referring to the spot where the river flows into the lake.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the county was a territory inhabited and controlled by the Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful alliance of five native tribes. European settlement in the area started in the early 18th century, predominantly by French fur traders. The British took control after the French and Indian War in 1759.

The city of Oswego and the surrounding areas played an important role during the American Revolutionary War, situated at the confluence of waterways connecting Lake Ontario with the Atlantic colonies. The county later witnessed rapid industrial and economic growth due to its role in transportation and access to water power from the river.

One fun fact about Oswego County is that it is home to the Salmon River, one of the premier freshwater fisheries in North America, attracting anglers from far and wide for its world-class salmon and steelhead runs. The county also hosts the annual Oswego County Fair, a popular agricultural event that has been taking place since 1852, featuring livestock exhibits, live entertainment, and various other attractions.
