Putnam County is located in the lower Hudson River Valley of New York State, situated between the Hudson River to the west and the Connecticut border to the east. It is named in honor of Israel Putnam, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. Established in 1812, the county was originally part of Dutchess County, one of the twelve original counties of New York province.

Putnam County played a significant role in the American Revolution due to its strategic location. The Continental Army constructed forts, roads, and supply depots there. The region was an important part of the Hudson Highlands, a natural barrier that made it difficult for British forces to advance northwards. The most famous event in Putnam County during the revolution was the capture of Major John Andre, a British officer who conspired with American General Benedict Arnold. Andre was apprehended near Tarrytown and later executed as a spy in Tappan.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Putnam County transformed from an agricultural area into a popular location for wealthy New Yorkers seeking country homes. The County experienced significant growth thanks to the arrival of the New York Central Railroad in the 1840s, which led to an increase in business investments and population.

Today, Putnam County is known for its beautiful landscapes, lakes, and reservoirs, attracting nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. The county is home to three state parks - Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Hudson Highlands State Park, and Wonder Lake State Park - which provide ample opportunities for hiking, fishing, and boating.

Fun fact: Putnam County was the primary filming location for the 1987 film "Fatal Attraction," starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. The county's scenic beauty and charming small-town atmosphere made it a perfect setting for the thriller.
