Rensselaer County is located in the eastern part of the state of New York, USA. Covering an area of approximately 665 square miles, the county was formed on February 7, 1791, when it was separated from Albany County. Named after the family of Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, an early Dutch settler and patroon who owned the large Rensselaerswyck estate, the county has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century.

In the early years, the area was inhabited by the Mahican tribe of Native Americans, before the Dutch settled in the region in the early 1600s. After the English defeated the Dutch in 1664, and New Amsterdam was renamed to New York, the region saw more settlers from Europe, particularly the English, Dutch, and German Palatines.

During the American Revolution, Rensselaer County was an important strategic location due to its proximity to the Hudson River. After the revolution, the cities of Troy and Rensselaer emerged as industrial powerhouses, thanks to their location on the Hudson River, with industries such as iron and steel production and textile manufacturing thriving during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, Rensselaer County still enjoys a rich historical heritage, with several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include notable locations such as the Bennington Battlefield, Grafton Lakes State Park, and the Oakwood Cemetery, among others.

Fun Fact: One notable resident of Rensselaer County was Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from the city of Troy, who is said to have inspired the popular American symbol "Uncle Sam." During the War of 1812, his meat barrels were stamped with "U.S." to designate the United States, but the local Troy residents jokingly referred to it as "Uncle Sam" Wilson's meat. Eventually, the nickname Uncle Sam became a symbol representing the U.S. government.
