Schuyler County is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, and was officially established on April 17, 1854. The county was named in honor of Philip Schuyler, a prominent military leader and statesman during the American Revolution. Schuyler County is bordered by Seneca, Tompkins, Chemung, Steuben, and Yates Counties. The county seat is the town of Watkins Glen.

The region's history dates back to the Native American tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, who first inhabited the area before European settlers arrived. Europeans began to settle in the region during the late 18th century, following the American Revolution. The land was divided into townships, including Catharine, Hector, Cayuta, and others that are now part of Schuyler County.

One significant event in Schuyler County's history occurred during the 19th century when the Erie Canal was constructed, connecting the region with the rest of the state and providing transportation and commerce opportunities. The canal propelled the growth of the local economy, attracting new settlers and businesses.

The county is famous for its scenic landscape, including the Watkins Glen State Park. The park is renowned for its 19 stunning waterfalls and breathtaking vistas, making it one of the most visited state parks in New York. The park is considered a geological wonder, which has been popular among tourists since the 19th century.
