Suffolk County is located in the easternmost part of New York State, on Long Island. Established on November 1, 1683, it is one of the twelve original counties of the Province of New York, created by British rule after the Treaty of Westminster in 1674. Suffolk County got its name in honor of English county Suffolk, reflecting the origins of many of its early settlers who arrived from that region.

The area was initially inhabited by indigenous people, like the Algonquian-speaking Lenape tribe, also known as the Delaware Indians. European settlers first arrived in the early 1600s, with the majority being English Puritans. During the American Revolution, the British occupied Long Island, including Suffolk County. After the war, the county transitioned from mostly agricultural land to a burgeoning resort destination due to its beautiful Atlantic Ocean coastline, the Great South Bay, and Long Island Sound.

Suffolk County is known for its picturesque beaches, quaint coastal towns, and charming rural landscapes. It is home to the famous Hamptons, a summer getaway for New York City's affluent residents, as well as Fire Island, a popular beach for both locals and tourists.

A fun fact about Suffolk County is that it houses the first U.S. lighthouse, which was built in Montauk in 1797. Called Montauk Point Lighthouse, it is still in operation today and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean for visitors.
