Tompkins County is located in the Central region of New York State, encompassing a total area of 492 square miles. It was established on April 17, 1817, and named in honor of Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as the Vice President of the United States under President James Monroe and was also the Governor of New York. The county seat is Ithaca, a culturally diverse and vibrant city known for its beautiful natural surroundings and its prestigious Ivy League institution, Cornell University.

The history of Tompkins County is closely tied to the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy, an alliance of six Native American nations that inhabited the region before European settlers arrived. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, European colonization gradually displaced the native population, with Ithaca eventually emerging as a key trade and transportation hub due to its location at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake.

The 19th century saw rapid economic development in Tompkins County, driven by the construction of the Erie Canal and the accessibility of water routes for commerce. Agriculture, milling, and manufacturing played a significant role in the economy. Cornell University, established in 1865, has since played a crucial role in shaping the intellectual and economic landscape of the county and giving it a reputation as a center for higher education and innovation.

A fun fact about Tompkins County is that it is home to 28 registered historic places, showcasing its rich cultural heritage. One of the most notable sites is the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies, the North American seat of the 14th Dalai Lama, making Ithaca and Tompkins County an important destination for the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism in the United States.
