Ulster County is located in the mid-Hudson Valley region of New York State. It was one of the twelve original counties in the Province of New York, established by an order of the Duke of York in 1683. The county is named after the Irish province of Ulster, reflecting the Dutch and English settlers' origination from that region.

Before European settlement, the area was home to the Esopus and Lenape Native American tribes. The Dutch were the first Europeans to explore the region, led by Henry Hudson in 1609. In the mid-17th century, the Dutch established forts and trading posts along the Hudson River, and the first permanent settlers arrived in the 1650s.

Ulster County played a significant role in the American Revolution. It housed several important military encampments, including those for the Continental Army and the British forces. The county's strategic location along the Hudson River made it an essential supply route for both sides.

In the 19th century, the area prospered as a center for agriculture and manufacturing, with the Hudson River and the Delaware and Hudson Canal serving as key transportation routes. The natural beauty of the region, including the Catskill Mountains and the Shawangunk Ridge, also attracted tourism, which remains a vital industry today.

Ulster County has a rich cultural history as well. The world-famous Woodstock Music Festival, celebrated in 1969, was held in Bethel, NY, but it is named after the town of Woodstock in Ulster County.

A fun fact about Ulster County is that it is home to the nation's oldest continuously operating inn, the Beekman Arms & Delamater Inn, located in Rhinebeck. This historic inn has been in operation since 1766 and has hosted many notable guests, including George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and more recently, Chelsea Clinton's wedding guests.
