Washington County is located in the state of New York, specifically in the eastern part of the state, bordering Vermont. Established on March 12, 1772, the county was initially called Charlotte County in honor of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of Britain. Following the American Revolution and the achievement of independence, the name was changed to Washington County on November 28, 1784, in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

The area holds historical significance as it witnessed important events during the Revolutionary War. Strategically situated near the Hudson River and Lake Champlain, the county was a center of military activity. The Battle of Saratoga in 1777, a key turning point in the Revolutionary War, was fought just to the west of Washington County, and Fort Edward, located within the county, served as a vital military post.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region experienced growth as a hub of agriculture, particularly in dairy farming, and slate production. Slate Valley, an area that includes parts of Washington County, was once one of the largest suppliers of slate in the United States.

Fun Fact: The small town of Whitehall, located in the southern part of Washington County, is known as the "Birthplace of the U.S. Navy." In 1776, during the Revolutionary War, the first ships of the U.S. Navy were constructed at Skenesborough Harbor on Lake Champlain, which later became the town of Whitehall. Today, the town features a museum and a monument dedicated to its historic naval heritage.
