Yates County, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, was officially established on February 5, 1823. It was created from parts of Ontario and Steuben Counties, with the county seat being in the village of Penn Yan. The county is named in honor of John Yates, a New York State governor who served from 1823 to 1824.

Before the formation of Yates County, the area was primarily inhabited by the Seneca Nation, one of the six tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Finger Lakes provided abundant resources and fertile land for the Seneca people. After the Revolutionary War, this area witnessed an influx of European settlers, mainly from New England, as part of the "Phelps and Gorham Purchase," which consisted of transferring large periods of land in upstate New York to private investors.

Yates County's economy was heavily dependent on agriculture in its early years, particularly focusing on wheat production. The flat and fertile land around the Finger Lakes made it especially suited for this purpose. As transportation methods improved, the area moved towards diversified farming, grape cultivation, and wine production, which continue to be a significant part of the local economy today.

One fun fact about Yates County is that it has become famous for being part of the Finger Lakes Wine Country, boasting over 25 wineries. The county is also known for its beautiful landscapes and natural attractions, such as Keuka Lake (one of the eleven Finger Lakes) and the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, which offers outdoor enthusiasts a scenic route for hiking, biking, and bird-watching.
