Auglaize County is located in the western part of the state of Ohio and was officially established on February 14, 1848. The county was formed from portions of Allen and Mercer Counties and was named after the Auglaize River, which means "fallen timbers" in the local Shawnee language. The river was so named due to the fallen trees in the area, which were a result of severe storms and tornadoes that occurred in 1819. The county seat is Wapakoneta.

One of the most significant historical events that took place in Auglaize County was the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. This confrontation between the United States and a confederation of Native American tribes was a turning point in the struggle for control over the Great Lakes region. The U.S. victory led to the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, opening up large parts of Ohio to settlement.

A fun fact about Auglaize County is that it is the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the moon. Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, and the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum is located in the city to commemorate his contributions to space exploration and his connection to the region.
