Champaign County, Ohio, is a county located in the western part of the state, named after Champaign County in Illinois. It was first established on February 20, 1805, when it was formed from the existing Greene and Franklin counties. The county seat is Urbana, which was founded by Colonel William Ward in 1805 and named after his father's home city in Virginia. Urbana became the county seat after a political dispute between Ward and Lewis Mad River, the original founder of the county, who wanted the county seat to be located in Chapman's Station, a small village nearby.

The county is largely rural and agricultural, with several small towns and the cities of Urbana and Mechanicsburg being the primary urban centers. As part of the great Black Swamp region of Ohio, Champaign County played an essential role in the development of agriculture in the Midwest. The area was known for its rich, fertile soil, which attracted many settlers looking to farm the land.

Champaign County also played an important role in the Underground Railroad, the secretly organized network of safe houses and people that helped many escaped slaves find freedom in the North. Due to its location just north of the Ohio River, Champaign County was a crucial stop on this route, with many locals offering assistance to fleeing slaves. A famous conductor of the Underground Railroad, Addison White, was a freed slave who settled in Mechanicsburg and assisted other escaped slaves in their journey to freedom.

One fun fact about Champaign County is that it is home to the Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, a unique wetland that is considered to be Ohio's most diverse and biologically significant natural habitat. It features rare plant and animal species, some of which can be found nowhere else in Ohio, such as the endangered Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake and the rare showy lady's slipper orchid.
