Clermont County is located in the southwestern part of Ohio and is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The county was established on December 6, 1800, making it one of the earliest settled regions in Ohio. It was named after the French word "clermont," which translates to "clear mountain" or "clear hill," possibly in reference to the scenic landscape of the area.

One of the key events in Clermont County's history was the arrival of European settlers in 1788, with many of them having been Revolutionary War veterans who had been granted land in the region as a reward for their service. Many of these settlers were originally from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, greatly contributing to the area's growth and cultivation of agriculture, which remains a significant part of the county's economy today.

Clermont County is known for its rich history with the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by African slaves in the 19th century to escape into free states and Canada. The county was home to a number of abolitionists, including Thomas Morris, a US Senator who was an outspoken opponent of slavery. The county seat of Batavia also played a significant role as a hub of anti-slavery activity.

A fun fact about Clermont County is that it is home to the Loveland Castle, officially known as Chateau Laroche. Built by Harry Andrews, a WWI veteran, in 1929, the castle was constructed using stones from the Little Miami River as well as bricks brought over as ballast in ships traveling from Europe. The castle, complete with towers, turrets, and a moat, still stands today as a unique historical site and popular tourist destination in the region.
