Clinton County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Ohio. Established on February 19, 1810, the county was named in honor of George Clinton, a prominent statesman and the fourth Vice President of the United States under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The county seat is Wilmington, which became the county seat in 1828, replacing the former county seat of New Burlington.

The history of Clinton County is deeply rooted in the Native American community, specifically the Adena culture. Later, the area was predominantly occupied by the Miami and Shawnee tribes, who relinquished their claims to the land in various treaties throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. European settlement began soon after, with the arrival of the first American settlers in 1798.
