Columbiana County, located in the northeastern region of Ohio, was established on March 25, 1803, as one of the earliest counties in the state. The county was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, with the name being a combination of "Columbus" and "Anna." Covering an area of around 535 square miles, the county is situated between the larger Mahoning and Ohio River Valleys, with its southern border along the Ohio River.

Columbiana County played a crucial role in the industrial revolution, with the Sandy and Beaver Canal connecting the Ohio River to other major waterways, facilitating trade and transportation. Additionally, the region was well-known for its abundant pottery industry, earning the city of East Liverpool the nickname "Crockery City." In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the county saw significant economic growth due to its coal mining and steel industries.

For a fun fact, the county's Beaver Creek State Park is the site of the historic Gaston's Mill, which dates back to the early 1830s. The mill is a remnant of early settlers' ingenuity and now serves as a museum, where visitors can learn more about the milling process and the area's history.
