Defiance County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Ohio. It was established on March 4, 1845, from land that once belonged to Williams County and the native Maumee Indian Reservation. The county was named in honor of Fort Defiance, a military fortification built in August 1794 during the Northwest Indian War by General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The fort played an essential role in defending newly settled lands from Native American resistance and ultimately led to the United States taking control over the Northwest Territory.

The City of Defiance serves as the county seat and was founded in 1822 by city planner Pierre Navarre. It is strategically located at the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers, which allowed the city to become an important hub for commerce and trade during the early years of American expansion.

The county is predominantly rural, with agriculture being its primary economic driver. In addition to farming, Defiance County is also home to several significant manufacturing facilities, including General Motors' Powertrain Division plant, which is one of the largest employers in the area.

A fun fact about Defiance County is that it was the site of Ohio's first reported discovery of oil in 1860, near the town of Sherwood. The oil industry remained a significant part of the county's economy until the mid-20th century when production began to decline.

Today, Defiance County boasts a rich history and offers several recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, and historical sites such as the aforementioned Fort Defiance and the Auglaize Village & Historic Farm Museum, which provides visitors with a glance of life in the 19th-century rural Ohio.
