Gallia County, located in the southeastern portion of the great state of Ohio, was founded on April 30, 1803. Originally home to the Adena culture, the area was settled by multiple Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, the Iroquois, and the Mound Builders. The county was named after Gaul, the ancient name for France, to honor the French ancestry of the settlers that formed the French 500.

In 1790, the United States government, under the influence of George Washington, struck a deal with the Scioto Company to sell land in Ohio to French emigres who had lost everything in the French Revolution. In 1795, the first group of these settlers, led by Colonel Joel Barlow, established the community of Gallipolis. Despite facing economic difficulties, the settlers persisted and helped to develop the region.

Gallia County is known for its beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills, dense forests, rivers, and rich farmlands. Agriculture and livestock have always played essential roles in the county's economy. The region is rich in cultural heritage, holding on to the early settlers' traditions and hosting several popular annual events such as the Gallia County Junior Fair and the River Recreation Festival.

Fun fact: Gallia County is home to the Silver Bridge disaster, which occurred on December 15, 1967, when a suspension bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio, collapsed, resulting in the loss of 46 lives. The disaster inspired new legislation and modern bridge inspection protocols, making bridges across the United States safer for travelers.
