Guernsey County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Ohio, has a rich historical background. Created on March 1, 1810, the county was named after the English Channel Island of Guernsey, which was the native home of William Goforth, one of Ohio's early legislators. Cambridge, the county seat, was established in 1806 and serves as the heart of Guernsey County.

The county's history is deeply rooted in the coal and manufacturing industries, which provided immense economic growth throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Thanks to the resource-rich lands within the region, coal mining became a significant source of employment and income, and remains so to this day.

Following the development of the National Road, which passed through Guernsey County in the mid-19th century, the region saw a flurry of settler activity, as well as improved transportation links to surrounding areas. The road even played a vital role in America's westward expansion.

One fun fact about Guernsey County is that it is home to The Great American Steam Locomotive Museum, which houses the largest steam-powered train in the world, nicknamed the "Big Boy." The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of steam locomotives and provides an interactive experience for visitors to explore the timeless wonders of these engineering marvels.
