Hancock County, located in the great state of Ohio, was named in honor of John Hancock, a prominent figure during the American Revolutionary War and the first signatory of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Established on January 21, 1828, the county was officially organized on April 1, 1833, and its county seat is in Findlay. The county is part of the region historically known as the Black Swamp and is situated in northwestern Ohio.

The history of Hancock County is enriched by the influence of Native Americans who once inhabited the area, including the Wyandot, Shawnee, and Miami tribes. This area played an important role during the War of 1812, as it lay along the border of the United States and the uncharted Western frontier.

A fun fact about Hancock County is that Findlay, its most populous city, is dubbed "Flag City, USA." The title was adopted in 1968 after a local businessman, John B. Cooke, launched a campaign aimed at boosting public patriotism by displaying flags. The U.S. Congress officially recognized Findlay's title in 1974, and today, you can still see numerous flags throughout the city as a testament to this patriotic history.
