Harrison County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Ohio, USA. The county was formed on February 1, 1813, and was named in honor of General William Henry Harrison, who later became the ninth President of the United States.

Harrison County's rich history can be traced back to the time of Native American settlements. When European settlers arrived in the 18th century, the area was inhabited by the Wyandot and Delaware tribes. Much of the county's growth was attributed to the land grants given to Revolutionary War veterans, which led to an increase in population and a subsequent boom of agricultural and industrial development in the region.

One significant development in Harrison County history was the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in the 1820s and 1830s. The canal system connected Harrison County to the broader regional economy, which spurred further growth and led to the establishment of several towns, including Cadiz, the county seat.

The county played an essential role in the coal mining industry during the 19th and 20th centuries. In fact, at one point, Harrison County was considered the leading coal producer in Ohio, with many mining communities like Tippecanoe, Georgetown, Hopedale, and New Athens emerging as key economic centers in the county.

Fun Fact: Clark Gable, the famous Hollywood actor best known for his role as Rhett Butler in the classic film "Gone with the Wind," was born in Cadiz, Harrison County, on February 1, 1901. The Clark Gable Foundation now runs a museum in the heart of the town in honor of the renowned actor, attracting visitors from all over the world.
