Henry County, located in the great state of Ohio, has a rich historical background that dates back to its founding in 1820. Named in honor of Patrick Henry, an American statesman and a Founding Father who was instrumental in the American Revolution and a strong advocate for American Independence, Henry County was initially made up of parts of other counties.

Prior to the county's establishment, the area it occupies was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Miami, Lenape (Delaware), and Shawnee. European settlers, drawn by fertile farmland and abundant resources, began to move into the region in the early 19th century. With its growth, however, came tensions and conflicts between the Native Americans and the settlers, culminating in the war known as the Toledo War in the 1830s. The Treaty of the Maumee Rapids in 1817 helped bring an end to the conflict and opened the area for more settlement.

Agriculture played a crucial role in Henry County's development, with wheat, corn, and soybeans being grown on large swaths of fertile land, along with livestock farming. The introduction of canals, such as the Miami and Erie Canal in the late 1820s, and later the advent of the railroad, propelled the county's economy forward, playing a significant part in facilitating trade and transport.

The county seat is the city of Napoleon, named after the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Today, Napoleon and the other towns and villages within Henry County continue to be influenced by their agricultural roots.

Fun Fact: Henry County is home to the world's largest tomato food processing plant. Campbell Soup Company has a significant presence in the county, and as a result, Napoleon, Ohio is nicknamed "The Soup City."
