Licking County is located in the central region of the great state of Ohio. Established on March 1, 1808, the county was named after the nearby Licking River, which in turn was named for its salt licks that attracted wildlife such as deer and buffalo. The county seat is Newark, and the total population is estimated to be around 176,000 residents.

The area that is now Licking County was once a part of the Northwest Territory, which was established by the U.S. government after the American Revolutionary War to facilitate the settlement and governance of lands won from Great Britain. Various Native American tribes, such as the Shawnee, Delaware, Wyandot, and others, inhabited the land before it was ceded to the United States.

The early settlements in Licking County were established primarily by Revolutionary War veterans who received land grants as a reward for their service. Throughout the 19th century, the county experienced an influx of European immigrants, including Dutch, English, German, Irish, and Scottish settlers. Agriculture played a significant role in the county's early development, with the establishment of several mills and farms.

The transportation infrastructure of Licking County began to expand in the 19th century with the construction of the National Road, the Ohio and Erie Canal, and later, the arrival of the railroad system. These systems significantly contributed to the county's growth and connected the region to other major cities in Ohio and beyond.

Fun Fact: Licking County is home to The Longaberger Company, a renowned American manufacturer of handcrafted, hardwood maple baskets. The company's former headquarters in Newark is shaped like the distinctive Longaberger basket, making it a unique architectural landmark in the region. The seven-story building, completed in 1997, is known as the "World's Largest Basket."
