Pickaway County is located in the central part of the great state of Ohio, and was originally established on March 1, 1810. It derived its name from the Native American word "Piqua" or "Pik-wi," which means "Man who arose from ashes" - referring to an ancient Shawnee legend.

In the early 1800s, European settlers began to migrate to the region, primarily consisting of Scotch-Irish and German immigrants who were attracted to the county's fertile farmland. Circleville, the county seat, was founded in 1810 and was named after its original circular layout designed around a prehistoric earthwork constructed by the Hopewell Culture.
