Putnam County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Ohio. It was established on April 1, 1820, and named in honor of Israel Putnam, a distinguished general in the American Revolutionary War. The county was originally part of land that belonged to Native American tribes, and European settlement in the region began in the early 1800s. The county was formed from portions of Allen, Williams, and Shelby counties, and its county seat is the city of Ottawa.

Covering an area of approximately 482 square miles, Putnam County has a rich agricultural history, with fertile soil ideal for farming. Agriculture continues to be a dominant industry in the area to this day, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being its major crops.

One fun fact about Putnam County is that it is home to the oldest courthouse in Ohio that is still in use. The Putnam County Courthouse, located in the city of Ottawa, was completed in 1835 and is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. It has been renovated multiple times to meet the growing needs of the county, but much of the original structure remains intact. This historic courthouse is a testament to the region's rich history and commitment to preserving its heritage.
