Sandusky County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Ohio. Established on February 12, 1820, the county was named after the Sandusky River, which originates from the Wyandot language, meaning "water" or "water within water pools."

The land saw the migration of Europeans in the 18th and 19th centuries due to expansion and industrialization. The county has a rich history of Native American presence, primarily with Wyandot, Seneca, and Shawnee tribes. It also played a significant role in the War of 1812, as Fort Stephenson, located in the present-day city of Fremont, became a central site during the conflict. The fort successfully protected the region from British and Native American forces under the command of Major George Croghan.

Sandusky County was among the counties in Ohio that experienced rapid economic development during the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the railroad boom. As transportation became more accessible, industries like agriculture, glass production, and manufacturing flourished in the area. One of the prominent historical figures connected to Sandusky County is Charles Martin Hall, the inventor of the aluminum refining process, who attended school in the county.

A fun fact about Sandusky County is that it is home to the world's largest selection of fishing tackle at the Ohio-based store Fisherman's Wharf, located in the city of Port Clinton. Anglers and fishing enthusiasts from all over the country come to explore and purchase fishing gear from this one-stop shop.
