Union County is located in the central region of the state of Ohio, United States. The county was formed on April 1, 1820, making it one of Ohio's 86 counties. Union County was named as a reflection of the desire of the residents to unite with the neighboring Delaware and Logan counties. The county's seat, Marysville, was established in 1819 and was named after a resident named Mary Mitchell.

Initially, the region was inhabited by tribes like the Shawnee, Miami, and Wyandots. However, after the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 and the Treaty of Fort Industry in 1805, Native American claims to the land decreased, paving the way for European settlers. The first settlement in the region was the Milford Center, established in 1797 by Richard Mendenhall, a Quaker from North Carolina.

Agriculture and farming have been the primary economic drivers of Union County throughout its history. The fertile land and temperate climate allowed for excellent crop growth and the development of the farming industry. The region became known for producing corn, soybeans, wheat, and other agricultural products.

Over time, the county has grown and diversified its economy, embracing automotive manufacturing, wholesale retail, and healthcare services. Today, Union County encompasses 437 square miles and has a population of about 60,000 residents.

A fun fact about Union County is that Charles W. Fairbanks, the 26th Vice President of the United States under Theodore Roosevelt, was born in one of Union County's townships, Unionville Center, on May 11, 1852.
