Van Wert County is located in the northwestern region of Ohio, USA. The county was created in 1820 and later organized in 1837, named in honor of Isaac Van Wart, an American revolutionary war hero who captured British Major John Andre, a spy working with Benedict Arnold. However, a clerical error led to an incorrect spelling, thus becoming Van Wert.

The county seat is Van Wert city, which was founded by Captain James Riley in 1824. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the county was primarily focused on agriculture and small-scale industries, which led to the establishment of supporting businesses and railroads to transport goods.

Van Wert County was also a part of the Great Black Swamp, which was a vast wetland area that once covered much of western Lake Erie's watersheds. Over time, the land was drained and converted into fertile farmland, making the county an important agricultural center in Ohio.

One fun fact about Van Wert County is that it is home to the Brumback Library, which is the first county library established in the United States. The library was dedicated on January 1, 1901, after a generous donation from John Sanford Brumback, who wanted to ensure that everyone in the county had access to a library. The building is an architectural gem and remains in operation to this day.
