Wyandot County, located in the great state of Ohio, has a rich and vibrant history that traces its roots back to Native American settlements. The post-European history of Wyandot County began in the early 1800s, when settlers started moving into the region. Established on February 3, 1845, the county was named in honor of the Wyandot Native American tribe, who once inhabited the area.

Prior to European settlement, the region was home to various indigenous tribes, including the Huron, Erie, and Neutral. The arrival of Europeans brought considerable change to the area, leading to conflicts with Native tribes and reshaping the region culturally and spatially.

The Wyandot tribe signed the Treaty of Wapakoneta with the United States government in 1842, surrendering their claims in Ohio and moving to reservations in Kansas. Following this, the Wyandot County was officially organized, with its first county seat in the small settlement of Upper Sandusky.

A main driver of growth and development in Wyandot County was the completion of the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad in the 1840s, which attracted farmers and businesses to the region. Agriculture played and continues to play a vital role in the regional economy, with major crops including soybeans, corn, oats, wheat, and livestock.

Fun fact: A unique feature of Wyandot County is the Indian Mill Museum, the site of the first sawmill and gristmill built in Ohio by the United States government for the Wyandot Native American tribe around 1820. This museum offers a glimpse into the relationships between European settlers and Native American tribes in the region during that time.
