Alfalfa County is located in the north-central region of the great state of Oklahoma. It was created at the time of Oklahoma statehood in 1907 and named after William H. "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, an influential statesman and the state's ninth governor. The county was initially part of the Cherokee Outlet, an area designated for the settlement of the Cherokee Nation's western lands. It was opened for non-Native American settlement during the land run of September 16, 1893.

The county seat is Cherokee, and other towns in the county include Jet, Carmen, Goltry, Burlington, Ingersoll, and Amorita. In the early years, agriculture played a crucial role in the county's economy. Farmers cultivated vast lands with wheat and alfalfa, leading to its nickname "Alfalfa County." Cattle, sheep, and poultry farming were also present in the area. The discovery of oil and gas deposits in the early 20th century helped boost the economy, diversifying it beyond agriculture.

One fun fact about Alfalfa County is that it's home to the Great Salt Plains, a unique geographical formation. The salt flats of the Great Salt Plains are located within the Great Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge established in 1930. This vast salt plain is Oklahoma's largest saline flat, stretching across over 11,000 acres. Visitors to this extraordinary region can enjoy outdoor activities such as bird watching, wildlife observation, and the unique experience of selenite crystal digging.
