Atoka County is located in the southeastern part of Oklahoma and was formed from the Choctaw Nation territory on August 4, 1907, when Oklahoma became a state. The county was named after a Choctaw leader, Atoka, also known as Captain Atoka. This region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Caddo and the Choctaw, who were forcibly relocated to the area during the Trail of Tears in the 1830s.

The economy of Atoka County initially depended on agriculture, including cotton farming and cattle ranching. The arrival of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway in 1872 facilitated transportation and boosted the local economy. Coal mining also played a significant role in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The town of Atoka, the county seat, was established in 1867 and has a rich cultural history. It is home to the Civil War Confederate Cemetery, which pays tribute to the soldiers who fought during the Civil War, and the site of the Middle Boggy Battlefield.

A fun fact about Atoka County is that it is home to McGee Creek State Park, which offers various outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping. One of the park's unique features is the 3,350-acre McGee Creek Reservoir, known for its scenic beauty and crystal-clear waters, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
