Cimarron County is located in the Oklahoma Panhandle and is the westernmost county in the state. It was formally organized as a county in 1907 when Oklahoma achieved statehood. The region's history, however, dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish explorers first traversed the area.

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa. As European settlers moved into the region, the land became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The area that is now Cimarron County was originally part of the unorganized territory that was often referred to as "No Man's Land." It was later designated as the "Public Land Strip," which had no jurisdictional government, and remained so until Oklahoma's statehood.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cattle ranching and agriculture became the main industries in the region. Cimarron County was significantly impacted by the Dust Bowl, a severe drought in the 1930s that led to widespread soil erosion and agricultural devastation. The county's population declined sharply during this time as many residents were forced to relocate.

Today, Cimarron County is known for its unique geographical features and landmarks. A fun fact about the region is that it is the only county in the United States that borders four different states: Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas. This makes it a fascinating destination for travelers looking to visit the meeting point of multiple states in one trip.
