Cleveland County is located in the central part of Oklahoma and is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. The county was officially established on May 2, 1890, as part of the Oklahoma Territory, which itself was created in 1890. The county was named after President Grover Cleveland, who was the 22nd and 24th U.S. President. Prior to its establishment as a county, the land was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, most notably the Plains Tribes and the Five Civilized Tribes.

The development of Cleveland County began with the Land Run of 1889, during which settlers were allowed to claim land in the county after a starting gun was fired. The largest city and the county seat, Norman, was founded on the day of the Land Run, April 22, 1889, and grew rapidly in the following years. In the early years of the county, the economy was largely driven by farming and livestock, with agriculture playing a significant role.

Cleveland County has several institutions of higher education, including the University of Oklahoma, which was founded in 1890, soon after Oklahoma Territory was established. The university is an important hub for research and education in the region.

One fun fact about Cleveland County is that it is home to the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, which houses the world's largest Apatosaurus skeleton, a dinosaur that lived approximately 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period. The museum is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike, showcasing the rich natural history of Oklahoma and the surrounding region.
