Coal County, located in the great state of Oklahoma, has a rich history that can be traced back to the early 19th century. Originally part of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory, the region was first settled by the Choctaw tribe after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830. This treaty led to the forced migration of the Choctaw people from their ancestral lands in Mississippi to the new lands in the Indian Territory, an event commonly referred to as the Trail of Tears.

Coal County, as the name suggests, is famed for its abundant coal deposits, which played a pivotal role in shaping the region's economy and development throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Coal mining drew various immigrant groups to the region, particularly Italian and Eastern European settlers, seeking employment opportunities in the coal mines.

The county was officially created on November 16, 1907, when Oklahoma achieved statehood. Originally named Tobucksy County, it underwent a name change to Coal County in 1908. The bustling town of Coalgate became the county seat.

One fun fact about Coal County is the annual Coalgate Independence Day celebration, also known as the Coal County Fair. This event dates back to the early 20th century and continues to be a beloved tradition. The fair features a variety of activities, including a rodeo, carnival, parade, and fireworks display, showcasing the pride and community spirit of Coal County residents.
