Garfield County is located in the north-central part of Oklahoma and has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The county was named after President James A. Garfield and was officially established in September 1893, following the Cherokee Outlet Land Run, which was the largest land run in U.S. history. Enid, the county seat, was founded during this land run and has since been the economic and cultural hub of the area.

Before it was settled by Americans, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Wyandotte and Kansa, who were relocated to the Cherokee Outlet as part of the Indian Removal Act in 1830. The area later played a crucial role in the late 1800s cattle industry, with cattle drives passing through the region from Texas to the railheads in Kansas.

The agricultural sector has been the backbone of Garfield County's economy. Early crops included wheat, corn, and oats, and later, cotton and alfalfa. Oil was discovered in the early 20th century, leading to an oil boom that attracted investment and contributed to the county's development.

One fun fact about Garfield County is that it is home to the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma, located in Enid. The museum boasts the third-largest collection of railroad equipment and memorabilia in the United States, with over one million artifacts on display, including a wide variety of trains and engines that date back to the golden era of American railroading.
