Harper County, located in the northwestern part of Oklahoma, was created at statehood in 1907. The land in Harper County originally belonged to a large expanse known as the Cherokee Outlet, which was designated for Cherokee Native Americans who had been relocated from their lands to the east. The Outlet was opened for settlement in the historic Land Run on September 16, 1893.

Before statehood, the area that is now Harper County was assigned to the short-lived Day County in the Oklahoma Territory. Later, Harper County was named after Oscar G. Harper, a prominent attorney in the early years of Oklahoma Territory and a member of the Territorial Supreme Court. The county seat, Buffalo, was officially established in 1908.

The region is predominantly rural, with agriculture playing a significant role in its economy. Cattle raising, wheat cultivation, and oil and gas production are primary sources of income for the county's residents. Harper County is also known for its numerous wind farms, owing to the windy conditions in northwestern Oklahoma.

Fun Fact: Harper County is home to the Selman Bat Watch program, which takes place at Alabaster Caverns State Park. Visitors have an opportunity to see large colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from their caves and fly to their feeding areas during the summer months.
