Hughes County, situated in the great state of Oklahoma, has a rich historical background. Established on July 16, 1907, it was named in honor of W. C. Hughes, a respected Oklahoma City attorney who also had a significant impact on the writing of Oklahoma's state constitution. Hughes County belongs to a part of Oklahoma tainted with the temporary relocation of the Creek and Seminole Native American tribes during the infamous Trail of Tears in the 1830s.

Spanning over 815 square miles, the county originally thrived on agriculture and livestock - particularly cotton farming, which was a dominant industry in the region until oil discovery in the 1910s. The emergence of oil drilling led to a significant population growth and further economic prosperity. Historic towns such as Wetumka, Holdenville, and Calvin dot the landscape of the county.

A fun fact about Hughes County is that it hosts the annual Sucker Day Festival in Wetumka. The event originated from a humorous incident in 1950, where the town's residents were "suckered" by a clever salesman into investing in a non-existent circus. Today, the festival is a lively and entertaining tribute to the town's history, featuring parades, games, and various family-friendly activities.
