.Jackson County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Oklahoma. Established on August 16, 1907, shortly after Oklahoma became a state, the county was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. The county seat is Altus, which serves as the economic and cultural center of the region.
Before the arrival of European settlers, nomadic Native American tribes inhabited the area, primarily the Comanche and Kiowa tribes. The region became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The western part of Jackson County was designated as part of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in the late 19th century, but after the opening of the reservation for settlement in 1901, European settlers swarmed into the region.
The county has an agricultural heritage, with cotton and wheat being the principal crops grown. In addition to farming, early residents also engaged in ranching, trade, and service industries. As part of the progressive evolution in the 20th century, Jackson County saw the construction of Altus Air Force Base in the early 1940s. This military installation stimulated the local economy and played a vital role in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as a training base.
