Jefferson County is located in the southern portion of the great state of Oklahoma. Established in 1907 during the time of Oklahoma's statehood, the county was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. It is part of the larger historical region known as the Red River Valley, which has a long and storied Native American history.

Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, notably the Comanche and Kiowa. In the early 19th century, Jefferson County witnessed an influx of European settlers, in part due to the Louisiana Purchase, which opened up vast lands for settlement.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Jefferson County experienced further development, mostly driven by agriculture and livestock. The region was known for its fertile soil, making agriculture the backbone of the local economy. Cotton was the dominant crop, but wheat, corn, and sorghum were also grown. Additionally, cattle farming and horse breeding were significant contributors to the county's economic prosperity.

In the mid to late 20th century, oil and gas exploration added another dimension to the county's economy. The development of the Healdton and Walters oil fields within the county played a significant role in Oklahoma's growth as a major oil-producing state.

One fun fact about Jefferson County is that it is home to the impressive Lake Texoma on the Red River, which is the fourth largest reservoir in Oklahoma. Lake Texoma is a popular recreational destination, attracting visitors for boating, fishing, camping, and water sports. This impressive region offers beautiful scenery and a rich history that is still treasured today.
