Johnston County is located in the South Central region of the great state of Oklahoma. It was created at the time of Oklahoma's statehood on November 16, 1907, and was named in honor of Douglas H. Johnston, a prominent Chickasaw Nation leader and governor. The county was previously a part of the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory.

The history of Johnston County is deeply connected to the Native American tribes in the region. The Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes were among the first to settle in the area after being forcibly relocated during the 1830s through the infamous Trail of Tears. They established schools, agricultural communities, and government systems in the area.

Johnston County's economy was initially based on agriculture, specifically cotton farming, until the early 20th century. The discovery of oil in the 1920s spurred the region's economic growth, and oil production remained an essential industry for the county for many decades.

Today, Johnston County is known for its beautiful landscapes, including the Washita River and the Arbuckle Mountains, which provide many recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. The county is home to several towns, such as Tishomingo, the county seat, Mill Creek, Wapanucka, and Mannsville.

A fun fact about Johnston County is that it is the site of the Tishomingo Wildlife Refuge, a protected area that spans over 16,000 acres. Established in 1946, this refuge serves as a breeding ground and wintering habitat for waterfowl and is an essential sanctuary for various wildlife species like white-tailed deer, reptiles, and a plethora of bird species, including the endangered least tern.

Overall, Johnston County in Oklahoma has a rich history tied to the Native American tribes of the region and offers beautiful landscapes along with protected wildlife for nature enthusiasts to enjoy.
