Kay County, located in the north-central part of Oklahoma, was formed in 1893 and is named after Chief Kaw, the leader of the Kanza Native American tribe. It covers an area of approximately 945 square miles and has Ponca City as its largest city and county seat. The region was first inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Kanza, Osage, Pawnee, and Tonkawa.

During the Land Run of 1893, a historical moment in Oklahoma history, thousands of settlers rushed into the Cherokee Outlet, including the area now known as Kay County, to claim land for their homes and farms. Soon after its establishment, the county experienced an oil boom in the early 1900s, which led to a great expansion of its economy and population growth.

One prominent figure from Kay County is E.W. Marland, the founder of the Marland Oil Company and a former Governor of Oklahoma from 1935 to 1939. Marland was a key figure in the growth of the oil industry in the region, and his former mansion in Ponca City, the Marland Mansion, is now a historical site open for tours.

A fun fact about Kay County is that it is home to the 101 Ranch, also known as the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch. Established in 1893 by the Miller Brothers, the ranch became one of the largest and most successful ranches in the United States, with over 110,000 acres. It operated as a working ranch and generated attractions such as the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, which toured the United States and Europe in the early 20th century. This show is credited with introducing Western culture to a broader audience and has been featured in various films and documentaries.
