Latimer County, located in the southeastern part of Oklahoma, was created on July 16, 1907, after the state of Oklahoma was granted statehood. It was named in honor of James L. Latimer, a delegate from Wilburton - the county seat - to the 1906 Oklahoma Constitutional Convention. The area that now comprises Latimer County was originally part of the Choctaw Nation, which was among the Five Civilized Tribes that were forcibly relocated to the Indian Territory during the 1830s due to the Indian Removal Act.

Latimer County is known for its diverse terrain, including the Sans Bois and Winding Stair Mountain ranges and part of the Ouachita National Forest. The landscape played a role in developing a mixed agricultural and mining economy, with coal mining historically significant to the county's growth. The mines in the region, most notably the McAlester Coal Mining Company, contributed to the expansion of towns like Red Oak, Wilburton, and the now-abandoned Gowen.

A fun fact about Latimer County is that it is home to Robbers Cave State Park, which is steeped in folklore and once served as a hideout for notorious outlaws like Jesse James and Belle Starr in the late 19th century. The park, with its rugged beauty, is now a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and fishing.
