Mayes County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Oklahoma, was officially created on November 16, 1907, at the time of Oklahoma's statehood. The county was named after Samuel Houston Mayes, a U.S. Congressman and the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1895 to 1899. Mayes County is within the Cherokee Nation's jurisdiction, and it covers an area of approximately 684 square miles.

The area that comprises present-day Mayes County was once part of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, following the forced relocation of the Cherokee people in the 1830s via the infamous Trail of Tears. The region was predominantly rural and relied mostly on agriculture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area's economy focused on crops such as corn, wheat, cotton, and alfalfa, as well as livestock like cattle and hogs.

One notable town in Mayes County is Pryor, which has been the county seat since 1907. Originally named Coo-Y-Yah by the Cherokee people, Pryor is home to the MidAmerica Industrial Park, one of the largest industrial parks in the U.S., attracting several manufacturing and technological companies.

A fun fact about Mayes County is that it hosts the annual Rocklahoma Festival, a massive outdoor music event featuring various rock and heavy metal bands. Since its inception in 2007, the Rocklahoma Festival has attracted thousands of fans and has grown to become one of the country's most significant rock festivals.
