Murray County, Oklahoma

Murray County, located in the southern part of Oklahoma, was established on September 16, 1907, when Oklahoma became the 46th state of the USA. The county was named in honor of William H. Murray, an influential political figure in the early history of Oklahoma who went on to become the ninth Governor of the state. Murray County spans an area of 425 square miles and has its county seat in Sulphur, which is encompassed within the Chickasaw Nation.
Murray County is characterized by its rolling hills, recreation areas, and mineral water. The area has a rich Native American history, particularly that of the Chickasaw tribe, which was relocated to the area following the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The region experienced growth upon the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in 1887, which bolstered the local economy and spurred development.
A fun fact about Murray County is that it is home to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, which was originally established as the Sulphur Springs Reservation in 1902, and later renamed the Platt National Park in 1906. This park is well-known for its natural mineral springs, which have long attracted visitors for their therapeutic properties, earning the nickname "The Healing Waters."
